This keystroke is listed in 'Help -> Keyboard Shortcuts' as Command-Option-Delete.

How To Delete Photos From Library On Mac OsYes, this seems to be gone in iPhoto 5. The iLife designers seem to have decided that no one wants to permanently delete photos or music. However, you can permanently delete from the library from within a Smart Album, just not from within a regular album.
 After searching the Apple forums I have two suggestions for how to delete from both an album and library. Which one you choose depends on how many photos need to be deleted and how they're organized. If you have just a handful these techniques may still be more effort than they're worth.
 1- You can permanently delete all photos in an album by creating a Smart Album where Album is the album you want to delete. Select all the photos in that Smart Album and delete. Then delete both the Smart Album and the original album.
 2- Create a keyword such as 'To Trash' (or use an existing one that doesn't have any photos assigned to it). Assign that keyword to the photos you wish to delete. (An easy way to do this is to open the keyword pane and drag the photos onto the keyword.) Switch to the library and display all photos with that keyword (by clicking the keyword in the keyword pane). Select All and delete.
 Don't forget to empty the trash so you can recover the disk space (it's now in the iPhoto menu).
The Keyboard Shortcuts option under the Help menu lists this and many other useful keystrokes.

How To Delete Photos From Library On Macbook ProIt is not true that this action causes the photo to be 'gone for good.' The photo is moved from the library to the Trash (the iPhoto Trash album, not the Finder Trash). It remains in the trash until you empty it (under the File menu).

I delete photos from inside an album while also removing them from the library by selecting them and using 'option + delete'
 Why do you have to press 'command' as well? it deletes from the album as well as the library without 'command'

Not sure which version of iPhoto you're using, but that definitely doesn't work in 4.0.3. Using just Option-Delete does work in iTunes -- I use that all the time -- but whenever I try to do the same in iPhoto it doesn't do the trick. Gotta hold down Command, too. 
I own IPhoto since the early versions and have deleted pix from the library by just hitting 'delete'. So they still exist in the database, taking space. How could I rebuild the library and delete for good those pix. Or does anybody know a convenient way of deleting those pictures from the database without having to research them one by one?
